Calculated from daily closes, with up to 250 earlier sessions for initialization. Bollinger Bands use a simple average and population standard deviation; RSI uses Wilder smoothing. The 40/80-candle view changes the display, not the calculations. Future indicator values appear only after you answer.

Game rules & scoring

Screened historical examples from AAPL, ACN, ACGL, and ADBE. Answers use only the visible bars. Examples are automatically selected by explicit thresholds; they are not discretionary human pattern judgments. Multiple qualifying matches are excluded.

Candle mode evaluates the final candle or pair, with five earlier sessions for trend context. Chart mode evaluates the highlighted last 40 sessions. Confirmed swings use two visible neighbors on each side, strict highs/lows, and alternating extrema. Reversal examples require the final swing within the last 11 sessions. Triangles require a common span of at least 12 sessions, a final common touch within the last 11, initial width at least 4.5% of mean close, and positive final width below 70% of initial width.

Earn 25 XP for completing a round, plus 50 for a correct beginner answer or 75 for a correct advanced answer. Using a hint changes the correct-answer bonus to 25 XP. Incorrect answers reset your streak. Skips and future reveals add no XP. Progress is saved on this browser and device.

Chart-shape labels do not imply a confirmed reversal or breakout. “No clear pattern” means none of this mode’s named patterns qualifies. Future movement is shown for observation, not used to decide the answer.

Doji

Open and close are nearly equal: real body ≤8% of the candle’s range.

A doji shows a small real body; it does not establish a future direction.

Hammer

After a ≥1% five-session decline: body 10–32% of range, lower shadow ≥2.2× body, upper shadow ≤18% of range.

A long lower shadow after a decline is the defining context; later bullish confirmation is separate.

Shooting star

After a ≥1% five-session rise: body 10–32% of range, upper shadow ≥2.2× body, lower shadow ≤18% of range.

A long upper shadow after a rise is different from a lower-shadow hammer.

Bullish engulfing

After a ≥1% five-session decline: a green real body contains the previous orange body, is ≥1.2× as large, and is ≥40% of the current range.

The real bodies must engulf, while wicks do not have to.

Bearish engulfing

After a ≥1% five-session rise: an orange real body contains the previous green body, is ≥1.2× as large, and is ≥40% of the current range.

The candle colors and prior direction distinguish this from bullish engulfing.

Double top

Last three confirmed alternating swings: high–low–high; peaks within 2.5%, ≥8 sessions apart, trough ≥4% below the lower peak, prior eight-session rise ≥1%.

Two similar peaks form a candidate shape. A subsequent neckline break is a separate confirmation.

Double bottom

Last three confirmed alternating swings: low–high–low; lows within 2.5%, ≥8 sessions apart, bounce ≥4% above the higher low, prior eight-session decline ≥1%.

Two similar troughs form a candidate shape; a neckline break is not presumed.

Head and shoulders

Last five swings: high–low–high–low–high over ≥14 sessions, shoulders within 3.5%, head ≥4% above both, troughs within 6%, shoulders ≥2.5% above both troughs; prior eight-session rise ≥1%.

The middle peak is higher than both shoulders; the neckline joins the intervening troughs.

Inverse head and shoulders

Last five swings: low–high–low–high–low over ≥14 sessions, shoulders within 3.5%, head ≥4% below both, highs within 6%, shoulders ≥2.5% below both highs; prior eight-session decline ≥1%.

The middle trough is deeper than both shoulders; the neckline joins the intervening highs.

Ascending triangle

Three highs and three lows fit boundaries within 1.2% of mean close. Upper boundary changes ≤1.2%; lower rises ≥2.5% across their common span.

Approximately flat highs and rising lows define the candidate triangle.

Descending triangle

Three highs and three lows fit boundaries within 1.2% of mean close. Lower boundary changes ≤1.2%; upper falls ≥2.5% across their common span.

Approximately flat lows and falling highs define the candidate triangle.

Symmetrical triangle

Three highs and three lows fit boundaries within 1.2% of mean close. Upper falls ≥1.8%; lower rises ≥1.8% across their common span.

Both boundaries converge; the formation alone does not specify a breakout direction.

No clear pattern

No unique match to any named pattern in the selected mode under this game’s thresholds.

This does not mean that every possible technical pattern is absent.

How to practice candlestick and chart patterns

Start with candle-pattern mode and inspect the highlighted candle or pair, including the preceding trend. A hammer has a long lower shadow after a decline; a shooting star has a long upper shadow after a rise. An engulfing pattern compares the real bodies of two candles, rather than requiring every wick to be engulfed.

Switch to chart-pattern mode to compare swing highs, swing lows and converging boundaries. Lock your answer before viewing the annotations. The separate future reveal shows what followed; it does not determine whether the visible formation met the game’s criteria.

What does “No clear pattern” mean?

No single named pattern in the selected mode meets the game’s thresholds. These cutoffs make scoring reproducible; they are not universal technical-analysis standards. Recognizing a shape does not establish that its next move will succeed.
